Your Self Sabotage Has A Payoff That You Don't Know About. Here's How To Find Your Secondary Gain [ep. #273]
Secondary gain is the reason you keep pulling back every time things start working. Not because you're lazy. Not because you don't want it. But because your subconscious is getting something from keeping you exactly where you are.
In today's episode, I'm walking you through the exact process I use with my 1:1 clients to find what causes self-sabotaging behaviours, the NLP techniques I use to uncover subconscious patterns running underneath, and the four prompts that will help you figure out what your secondary gain actually is.
I'm also sharing a personal story from when I was a kid doing song and dance competitions that I only recently connected to why I pull back from visibility in my business.
If you've ever asked yourself, "why do I self-sabotage when things are going well," this episode is going to hit differently. Grab a pen. You're going to need it!

1. Find the pattern
What is the exact moment it happens for you?
What was going right before you pulled back?
Does it happen at the same point every time and if so, what does that point have in common?
2. Find the feeling
a. What feeling arrives in your body right before you go quiet or pull back?
b. Where do you feel it - chest, stomach, throat?
c. If we were to give the feeling a name, what would you call it?
3. Find the secondary gain
a. If you never went to the next level, what would you never have to face?
b. What would staying exactly where you are protect you from losing?
c. What is actually at risk if things get bigger?
4. Find the root
a. When is the first time you remember feeling that exact feeling from Prompt 2?
b. How old were you, and what was happening around you?

Secondary gain is the reason you keep pulling back every time things start going well in your business. Not because you're broken. Not because you don't want it badly enough. But because your subconscious is getting something from keeping you exactly where you are.
If you've ever asked yourself "why do I self sabotage when things are going well" this episode is going to change how you see every pattern you've been trying to break. I'm walking you through what causes self sabotaging behaviours, why your self sabotage patterns almost never start in your business and the exact 4 step process I use with my one to one clients to find, name and shift your secondary gain.
I'm also sharing the NLP techniques I use to uncover subconscious patterns running underneath your visibility, your selling and your launch behaviours. Plus a personal story from my childhood doing song and dance competitions that I only recently connected to why I pull back from visibility in my business. If you've been looping in the same pattern for months or even years, grab a pen. This one is going to land differently.
[00:00:00] Hello, my love. How are you? Welcome back to the subconscious expert. Ooh, today's gonna be a juicy one. I would buckle in. I would get a pen and bloody paper because we're talking all things secondary gain. Now I wanna ask you something before we even. Start getting into this episode. Um, and as we go through the episode, I almost want you to sit with this question and what we're gonna have a look at today is patterns and behaviors that you have in your life that you've been trying to break.
[00:00:32] You might have been trying to break these patterns and behaviors for three months, three years. 30 years and that's okay. And we're gonna have a look at it today and we're going to actually start to pull apart what's not allowing you to let go of this behavior, uh, let go of being in this pattern. And that might be, um, pulling back when you've got some momentum coming.
[00:00:59] It might be having a really good month and then disappearing. It might be saying that you're going to do X, Y, and Z and then we're still not there. Those patterns. What if, I'll get to the question in a minute. Here it is. What if those patterns that you've been trying to break were doing Exactly and working exactly the way that it was actually designed to?
[00:01:25] And I think when we look at it like that, in that reframe, which I love doing, love a reframe, good old NLP reframe, that reframe alone is going to change how you see everything. Moving forwards and how you see everything that you've been doing, kind of everything that you're calling self-sabotage right now is going to, you are gonna see it through a different lens from this podcast episode.
[00:01:51] So, like I said, we are talking about secondary gain, and if you have heard that term before, I want you to stay with me anyway, because there might be things that I say today that will allow you to hear it differently or land differently or. You might not have heard it explained before the way that I'm about to explain it.
[00:02:11] More importantly than that, I'm gonna help you find yours today. Like actually find if you've got a secondary gain there, that's why I said grab a pen and paper probably. Um, and we're gonna know what to do with it. We're gonna know what to do with it. So let's start with what secondary gain is, because I think it's one of the most important things that you can understand about your patterns if you do have secondary gain behind your patterns.
[00:02:36] Now, the reason why. I, I don't think it gets talked about in the way that it needs to is because people almost hear what I'm about to say in this podcast episode and be like, right. So you are, you are literally saying, Beck, that like, I wanna stay stuck. But you are sitting there and you are saying, I'm choosing to stay in this pattern or this behavior that [00:03:00] I don't want.
[00:03:01] And quite frankly, that's not what I'm fucking saying. I wanna be really clear about it. Secondary gain is very, very subconscious. Like you are not sitting there going, you know what, you know what? I'm just gonna, things are working really well for me right now. I'm just gonna pull back and have a lovely time and stop selling and feel like shit.
[00:03:22] That sounds great. Like that sounds great. I think I'll just do that, like obviously. That's not what's happening. Um, and that's not what you want to be doing consciously. What is happening is your subconscious, which as we know, runs about 95% of bloody everything you do. Um, every decision you make, every pattern you are running, your subconscious is making this calculation.
[00:03:48] Um, so if we take like expansion, for example, every time that you go to expand that calculation. Is like, oh, okay, so we are expanding now. Um, but what do we lose if we go there? Like, what, what actually happens if we go there? Oh my God. Like, will I be so busy that'll burn out again, or will I be um, inundated with hate comments if I really push my visibility?
[00:04:18] Like that's where it's going. Your subconscious has one job. That job is to keep you safe. Put it on a t-shirt. Whack it on your face as a tattoo. You know how much I talk about it and keeping you in this kind of familiar territory where your subconscious knows exactly what to expect and it keeps you away from anything.
[00:04:39] It's learned at any point of your life. Your subconscious is a hard drive. What is dangerous and. What to stay away from. So every single pattern that looks like self-sabotage, um, every pullback that happens, or every time that you feel that you've gotta pivot your whole business, or every time you go quiet and stop selling, or every time you have someone inquire about your services and then you forget to message them back, like every time that happens, your subconscious is trying to protect you from something it learned a long time ago.
[00:05:16] And the secondary gain is what you get, like what you get to keep by staying where you are. The secondary gain is what are you getting or what feels really good about staying where you are. So I'm just gonna give you a couple of examples that I see. I think, you know, obviously. We love an example because you can start to put it into your life and maybe see what's going on with your patterns.
[00:05:48] So for example, if I have a client who pulls back from the visibility that she's been creating, um, every time you know, her content has started to reach more [00:06:00] people, or, um, she's getting more comments or she's getting more followers. If we look at the secondary game behind that, the secondary game might be staying safe from judgment.
[00:06:11] Like the secondary gain might be from like staying safe, from being too much, um. Now that might be the version of success that actually cost her something once maybe a relationship. Um, maybe a sense of belonging, maybe a sense of who she was. She might have evidence around that. So the secondary gain she's getting from pulling back from visibility is staying safe from judgment, from staying safe, from being too much, um, or a lot of my clients and what I help them with, they stop selling when.
[00:06:45] Things get busy. Um, you know, they're busy delivering to their clients. They're busy in the business, and the secondary gain might be to prove to herself and to everyone that's watching that she's in it for the right reasons. Um, that she genuinely cares that she's not someone who just wants your money, for example.
[00:07:08] So there's a lot of different, the one actually, I'll, I'll do an example of, um, getting ill, 'cause this is something that I've worked with my clients a lot, so. If I have a client who gets ill after every big launch, and trust me there has been more than one client that I have worked on this with, um, every single time without fail, like she gets ill or they get ill, the secondary gain might be, um, permission.
[00:07:34] Like permission to rest or permission to receive care or like permission to stop without having to justify it or feel guilty about it. So there's so many things that's happening underneath the surface that really starts to show you what you are getting from staying exactly where you are at. And actually when we know.
[00:07:58] What we're getting from staying where we're at, we can look at that and go, Hmm, okay. If I, if my subconscious believes I'm getting this from, from not doing the thing that I want to be doing, how can I do the thing that I want to be doing and receive that too? So, for example, the, the illness one that I've just given you that example.
[00:08:23] If she wants permission to rest or if she wants permission to maybe take a step back after her launch, how can we look that she can carry on momentum and still receive that permission? But in a, in a different way, in a way that she doesn't need to keep getting ill in a way that she could rest. Or maybe after the launch do we have things set up that she can rest and keep the momentum up.
[00:08:50] So it's about looking about what you are getting from it. Um, and that could be anything. A lot of the things that. Come up with my clients is like control or [00:09:00] love or attention. You know, I spoke about, and I've spoke about in detail and in length. I know in many podcasts about my victim part, you know, and I know that doesn't resonate.
[00:09:10] You know, the word victim doesn't resonate with. With all of you, but I, that's what I called her because that's how she felt for me. And I, whenever was, I was playing my victim part whenever I was in that part. So that might have been, um, the one big one that I did, and I know I spoke about this before, but like I used to sabotage making money so my mom could come and save me.
[00:09:34] Um, and. The victim part for me was when I got love and attention. So I really had to teach my subconscious mind where I can get love and attention from other places. That is so that, that would serve me better, that would, that would not allow me to not make money. I could make money and get love and attention.
[00:09:53] So, do you see what I mean? Like there's every single pattern that you have. Has a payoff. It has a payoff. And actually until you find what that payoff is, until you find yours, um, until we can actually name what your subconscious is getting from, keeping you exactly where you are, you'll just keep recreating that pattern.
[00:10:14] You'll just keep recreating that behavior. Um. It responds so much deeper than what we think the subconscious mind does. Um, and finding your secondary gain is gonna be so powerful. Now, what I will preface is not every pattern and not everyone will have a secondary gain behind. Everything that they're doing.
[00:10:35] Sometimes I will dig for the secondary game with my clients and there is nothing there. And therefore I would look more at the behavior and the habits around the pattern. Then a lot of the time, however, there is something that they're getting by doing the thing that they're doing. So what I actually want us to start to do, um, and what I actually want us to have a look at is.
[00:10:57] How we put this into reality for you. This is gonna be, like I said, a pen and paper type of episode. So if you are driving, if you are on a run, if you are um, doing the dishes or in the shower, you might wanna come back to this one when you've got like a pen and you've got five minutes to actually sit with it.
[00:11:16] I'll also pop all of this into the show notes. For you as well, because I think it's helpful for you to go back to. Um, but I'm gonna walk you through exactly what I would ask a client in a session, kind of treating this like a session as po every podcast episode is. I always, so many people say that to me.
[00:11:33] It's like a, an extra coaching session every Tuesday. Um, but like, you are gonna actually do this work yourself right now. So the first thing that we want to do is we wanna find the pattern. Now we need to get really, really specific about when it happens. So we need to get really specific about what we call in NLP, the trigger and, and I want you to get really micro on this.
[00:11:58] What I mean, my micro is, I. [00:12:00] Every single detail, like what is the exact moment where you start going into this secondary gain. So it might be, um, the moment that your launch goes live and you are out in the open. Um, it might be the moment that your calendar fills up with new clients and you can see how big this is getting, and you're like, oh my God, now I've gotta pull back.
[00:12:26] It might be the moment where you can see you've got more real views. It might be the moment where you've had a really good week. In the business or a really good month in the business and the momentum has started and you're like, shit. So what I want you to do is I want you to just notice, and I just want you to get as specific as you can.
[00:12:47] I want you to imagine if I was like playing you in a movie and you had to explain to me the very first thing that happened that starts the process of. This sabotage, AKA secondary gain. What are you doing? The more specific you can get about when it happens, the closer we are to understanding what is actually protecting you and what you are being protected from.
[00:13:12] So find the pattern. You might already know that you might have that in your head if you've got a pattern that you play. What is that moment? What is that moment where that pattern comes in? And you might not be able to actually consciously answer that for me right now, and I know I'm not with you one-to-one, and we are digging, and I would be able to find that moment.
[00:13:31] So if you can't, what I would actually suggest for you to do is now I've brought it into your reticular activating system. Now I've brought it into your awareness. When you catch yourself in it. Let the fire alarm go off. Like warning, warning, warning. Oh my gosh. Okay. Right there it is. Like that is the exact moment that I go into my secondary gain.
[00:13:54] The next thing that we want to do is we want to actually find the feeling now. If you can, and if you do remember the last time that you played out this pattern that doesn't serve you, I want you to actually go back into that moment. I want you to see what you saw, hear what you heard, really feel the feelings of being in that moment.
[00:14:16] You, you might see it visually, uh, you like, if you close your eyes, you might see it almost on a screen. You might hear it, um, you might feel it. Everyone has different ways of processing within the subconscious, and that is a podcast episode I would love to do and I will do in the future. Um, so it. You might not feel it straight away.
[00:14:36] You might have to see it first in order for you to feel it. But the thing that I want you to do is I want you to notice what feeling arrives right as you start to pull back, right as you start to, I'm gonna say sabotage 'cause that would resonate with you more, but right in the moment that you start to sabotage and again.
[00:14:55] Like I said, you are going to be half, you're going to be, have to be, you are going to [00:15:00] have to be very particular and very specific with this because it is so subconscious that you might not even know that you are doing this right now. But if you can go back to that time, take your time. You might wanna pause this podcast episode and I just want you to sit with what feeling arrives, what feeling happens right before you start to pull back.
[00:15:23] Like is it overwhelm? Is it, um, a tightening in your chest? Um, is it something that like, feels almost like dread, even though like nothing's gone wrong? Is it anxiety? Is it a kind of numbness? Um, do you just go flat? Is it overthinking? What feeling, if we were to name the feeling. And where it is in your body, what would that, what would that look or feel or sound like?
[00:15:53] And that feeling for us is information. Um, your subconscious is literally flagging something in that moment, and it's really worth getting curious about, you know, I use the word curious with my clients all the time, especially because the sub, the subconscious work, like kind of never has an ending. Um, that's why, you know, I don't.
[00:16:15] When you work with me one-to-one, I don't dig all the time. We are like, you know, the subconscious work is as much about the future, um, and future pacing and repetition and behaviors and putting the action steps in, just like I speak about on the podcast. So I know future pacing and taking the action is as important as digging.
[00:16:34] But actually any feeling. Is giving you information and any feeling that you are feeling. If you can get yourself to a point, which is what I do with my clients, if you can get yourself to a point where you can be curious with it rather than being in it, that is where we start to shift through it more and you move through it quicker.
[00:16:53] And I still want all of my clients to feel. All their feelings. It's actually works quicker when you do, but that feeling is the alarm that your subconscious is telling you, and that is the moment where you go, oh, okay. That's the thing that happened before. Like we can almost attach that feeling back to probably a time in your childhood.
[00:17:19] Um, and that feeling is your subconscious warning that's like, fuck, we need to be, go back into safety. We need to go back into safety. So for example, uh, I'll take the visibility one. So say for example, I have put out, I'm just gonna use an actual example. I've put out a TikTok and one big thing for me, um, is that I hate it when people don't understand me or don't understand what I'm actually trying to say.
[00:17:48] Um, and that's why. Ironically, visibility has been the biggest thing that I've had to do work on. You know, I, I say ironically because I love to perform. I love to be on stages. I love people [00:18:00] watching me. I love people listening to me. That's all I've ever wanted in my life, and that's all I'll ever want.
[00:18:05] However, it is like one of the things that I really, um, pulled back on because of not being understood, not being liked, not being loved, all of the above. So. Did a TikTok and it was a little bit more, um, I wouldn't even say it was opinionated because I was literally telling an and teaching an NLP um, an NNLP process about the subconscious mind and how the subconscious mind works, and it was a new take for people.
[00:18:38] So people. One either watched half of the video and didn't really understand, or two, had never heard it in that way before. So they were like, no, I reject it more for them because they will just carry on not being able to change. However, um, as you can see, there's still some work here. Um, so this. Person commented on the video and that there was this immediate feeling in my body where I was like, eject, eject, eject.
[00:19:06] Delete the video. He doesn't understand what I'm trying to say. This feels really unsafe. I will never do this again. And that was the time. Boom. The secondary gain came in because it was like, no, we've gotta keep you safe. Pull back, pull back. Abort, abort, abort. Let's get out of here. And actually, I just.
[00:19:22] Sat in that feeling. That's the feeling that we want to know about. That's the feeling that we really want to understand and really get to know. Like you really wanna get to know that feeling. And you know, it was a little frustration and anger to start with. And for me it goes more into shame and embarrassment, which is tied back to a lot of performing arts, um, memories that have come up, which I did work on.
[00:19:47] In that moment when I felt that feeling, um, ironically it went back to when I was really young and, um, I was doing my song and dance for anyone who did dance festivals when they were younger. There was a category called song and dance. Obviously what it says on the tin, you sing and then you, you dance.
[00:20:05] And I was going on stage and the, we were using tapes back then. That's how old I am now. Like where you had to put your pencil in the tape and fucking rewind the tape back madness. Um, and the person on who was playing the music hadn't wound the tape back enough, and I missed the start of the song and dance, and it was a really quiet start to it, so I missed it.
[00:20:30] And then the music came on halfway through and I had to come on stage and. Say to the or will say in front of all of the audience, the judge, the person that's not right, can we start again? And I just remember like tears welling up in my eyes. I remember seeing my mom run over to the tape. Oh, like, you know, and it was a time in that moment where actually I did nothing wrong.
[00:20:53] It was, it was just, the tape wasn't at the right place to start my song of dance. But in that moment, the [00:21:00] shame and the embarrassment that. I couldn't come on at the time that I wanted to come on, and I had to then go on the stage. Can you see what that is? So people almost misunderstood me because I made a snap decision belief at that moment that it was my fault and that I didn't come on the stage in time.
[00:21:18] And that. Everyone is now judging me, and I felt shame and I felt embarrassment. So boom, there you go. So every time I put myself out there and then people don't understand, which is inevitable, like you cannot please everyone. And I don't wanna please everyone. I want people who want to listen to me. Want to listen to me.
[00:21:38] And that's the work that I've been doing, uh, quite recently, actually. That was quite a recent find for me. So you can hear my workings in real time, but you know, I have to be really aware of that secondary game because it could pull me back. Ironically, then I lost my voice, you know, so there was a lot of things that came up from that.
[00:21:59] But you can see what do I get from pulling back? Well, I get the safety of not having people. Say things that would hurt me or you know, so like, actually is that serving me? We need to have a look at it. So I know I went off on a bit of a tangent there, but what we wanna do is really have a look at the feeling, because the feeling is gonna give us so much information.
[00:22:24] So just notice what feeling it is for you. Number three, we then wanna obviously find the secondary gain. Um, and this. Might be uncomfortable. Sometimes it is, especially for secondary gain. 'cause like I said, you are not being like, and now I'm going to do this because like you, you're not actively choosing it.
[00:22:46] Your subconscious is kind of just being a sneaky beak. Um, but if you, like, if we look at your secondary gain and if you stayed exactly where you are, like if you never went to that next level, if things never got bigger than they are right now, um, if, what would you never have to face? What would you never have to risk?
[00:23:10] Like what would stay safe for you? So, for example, maybe it's relationships. So like maybe expansion for you has always felt like it comes of what comes at the cost of the people that you love. You know, maybe it's your time with them or their perception of you, or your sense of belonging, for example. Um, maybe it is your identity, like maybe staying at this level means that you still get to be.
[00:23:41] Relatable. You still get to be someone that people roots for. Um, you know, you still get to be the one that they can, that, that you can resonate with them and they can resonate with you. You still get to be in the process rather than in the success. [00:24:00] Maybe it's your energy. You know, maybe your subconscious has a very vivid memory of what it felt like the last time things got big and successful for you, and it's doing everything it can to make sure that you never feel that again.
[00:24:14] Maybe it's like literally something else entirely, almost. Sometimes with, with secondary gain, it's sometimes it feels quite vulnerable, like I said, too. Actually admit, um, but whatever it is, name it, that is your secondary gain. That is what your subconscious is protecting you from losing by staying exactly where you are.
[00:24:40] And actually naming it is the beginning of everything changing. Everything changing because actually just like my example with the tape recorder, which is my next one, uh, my next step in this, in this, uh, whole working out that the tape was just not rewound. Like the tape was just not rewound. That was it.
[00:25:04] And I didn't need to take on that belief. And I send so much love to that Beck at that time because she cared so much. She cared so much of doing it right. She cared so much of being amazing and she wanted to come first place and this might have hindered it. And now they all think I can't do it. And so much, you know.
[00:25:22] So actually it was nothing to do with that. Nothing to do with that. The tape just wasn't rewound the end. So, you know, and now like it's in my adulthood being like, well, I can't post too many videos, or I can't say what I wanna say. You know, all of those things When I first started my business, and again, like I said, this has been an ongoing work that I've been doing.
[00:25:44] Um, and now I, you know, I still see it now to this day where I have to really go, okay, I know, I know it feels unsafe. But we are okay. And actually, if anyone was to comment the way that they have, and people, many people have said many things disagreeing with me or being triggered by me or anything like that.
[00:26:03] And I fucking handled it because that's just who we are, you know? So actually naming it is the beginning of everything changing. So like I said, the next thing that we want to do is find the root. So when is the first time that you felt that feeling, or when is the first time that you took on that belief?
[00:26:28] When is the first time that you knew that you had to do a certain thing to not make yourself? Feel unsafe, like, how old were you? What was happening? And we don't need to go deep into it. We don't have to relive everything. You know, that is the, the whole amazing side of NLP. We just can start to change it.
[00:26:51] Even without, you know, reliving the whole thing and, and get in and talking about the whole thing. You know, sometimes, well most of the time when I'm doing work with [00:27:00] clients, I don't even have to know where they are, what's going on, what's happening for me to be able to change it for them. So just notice what comes up.
[00:27:08] Let your subconscious offer you something. If it doesn't offer it straight away, one, it might not be ready or two, you might just need a little bit more time to think about it and just see. If there is a memory attached to that and what learnings you can take from that memory. Just like I said, if I went back to the tape recorder memory, what were the learnings?
[00:27:30] It was just the tape wasn't rewound. It had nothing to do with me, and I went on and I did a really good job and actually I was brave enough to go onto the stage and say that that's not when the track starts. And please, can we start again? Probably everyone was rooting for me. Do you know what I mean? So what learnings can I take from that moment?
[00:27:49] What learnings can you take from that moment? The secondary gain, as we know, almost never starts in your business. It will start somewhere much earlier, like I said, in a moment where you made a decision probably without even realizing that you were making it about what it. What it costs to be fully seen or what it costs to be fully successful, or what it costs to be fully expansive or making the money that you want to make, or being the person that you want to be.
[00:28:19] And your subconscious has just been running that decision ever since. So just be curious. Just have a little luck. And then what we wanna do before we finish is just the reframe. You know, I don't wanna, I don't want you to walk away from this episode feeling like, great, okay, brilliant. Okay, what do I do with this now?
[00:28:38] Um, but your subconscious is your most loyal protector. Your most loyal protector, and it's been doing everything it can for years, decades, like to keep you safe from something that genuinely like, actually, genuinely believes is dangerous. So the way through is. Getting curious is understanding it is finding out what it actually needs, like what evidence does it need to see.
[00:29:06] What does it need to know is safe? Now, that was not safe then. Or like I said, if you are getting, you know, my example with love or attention, like if that's what you're getting from holding these old patterns, um, where could you get that elsewhere? That's, that, that serves you better. And start seeing how you can do that from there.
[00:29:27] And then the pattern starts to shift at the moment that your subconscious finally gets what it's always needed without you being pulling back or sabotaging. Okay. So I want you to go back and actually sit with. All of those steps, um, and the prompts, and I'll put a couple more prompts in the show notes as well, so you can either journal on them or think about them.
[00:29:51] Um, but before we close this episode, I just want you to do one thing. I just want you to, if we go back to prompt three and we really look [00:30:00] at the secondary, like finding the secondary gain, um. What would stay safe if you never went to the next level? That question, I just want you to ask yourself, is that the thing actually at risk or, or actually, is that a decision that you made a very, very long time ago that you subconscious just hasn't been updated on yet?
[00:30:28] Like the thing that your subconscious is protecting you from is something that is not actually the threat that it once was. And the moment that you can show, show your subconscious that like really, really show it. And that's what I've been doing. Collecting evidence your subconscious needs that it needs the evidence, it needs the feeling, it needs the experience.
[00:30:53] Like that's when the pattern finally has that permission to shift and you will stop looping. Ugh. It is the work I'm obsessed with as you know. You know, I'm not done talking about it. I will carry on talking about it, but hopefully today has just given you something to go and really have a look deeper within your behaviors because it's never behavior deeper within your behaviors to actually start having a look at what you are getting from staying where you are and either where we can get it from that would serve you better, or what your subconscious needs to know that we, you know, we no longer need to keep.
[00:31:29] I will see you on the next episode. I love you lots and have the best day.
